China has banned a dog-eating festival that dates back more than 600 years after a Chinese internet uproar over the way dogs are slaughtered, the official Xinhua news agency reports.

Dogs are butchered in the streets of Qianxi township in coastal Zhejiang province to prove the meat is fresh during the ancient festival, which is usually held in October.

The festival marks a local military victory during the Ming dynasty, in which dogs in Qianxi were killed so they would not bark and alert the enemy, state-run Xinhua says.

After the victory, dog meat was served at a celebratory feast, and since then local people have eaten dog meat at temple fairs held during traditional Chinese holidays, Agence France-Presse reported.

"The ancient fair was replaced by a modern commodity fair in the 1980s, but dog eating has been kept as a tradition," Xinhua says.

More from GlobalPost: Can eating dogs be done humanely?

"However, vendors began to butcher dogs in public a few years ago to show their dog meat is fresh and safe, as a way to ease buyers' worry that the meat may be refrigerator-preserved or even contaminated."

Thousands of Chinese internet users criticized the dog-eating festival on social networking sites, and called for the local Qianxi government to intervene.

"The government's quick response should be encouraged. I hope eating dogs will not be a custom there anymore. It's not a carnival, but a massacre," wrote an internet user named "Junchangzai" on a Chinese micro-blogging website, in a post that was "re-tweeted" 100,000 times, Xinhua says.

While dog ownership was banned in China during the Cultural Revolution as a bourgeois habit, it has become increasingly popular with China's growing middle class and one-child families, Reuters says.

terrible...anything they eats

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

I know hundreds of facebookers who have prayed and fought tirelessly for this end.....may it last forever xx

What's the difference between eating dogs and eating cows, pigs or chicken? They're all animals and they have lives. It's a very speciest thing to do to JUST ban dog meat.

I agree but every step in the right direction is to be applauded. Now they have to make the connection between dogs and other animals.

You are absolutely right.  In a perfect world, as they say.  Not now but hopefully someday whether it's my lifetime or not.  If only each human being on the planet would just consider the suffering of animals, there would be a chance to end the slaughter of innocents.

We have to start somewhere, and banning dog meat would be the most logical first step. Dogs have been human companions for a very long time. Plus we use them for seeing eye dogs, bomb sniffing, guard dogs - lots of things that make them useful to humans. The idea of eating them is unthinkable....although sadly, my understanding from this article is that they are only banning killing them at this festival, not in general:(

DOGS AND PUPPIES ARE COMPANIONS! I AM A VEGAN.

I think the biggest and most unacceptable problem at present, is the unnecessary and unbearable torture.  Thankfully, it seems more and more people are becoming more conscious, understanding.., and less apathetic.

Why not humans for that matter?
because if it's just meat were talking about than why are not humans banned from being food?
The reason:
Because we place value on humans higher than other forms of life.
I'm vegan, and i dont agree with eating any meat, but i do place a dogs life value much higher than that of a bug.  Both are life, one is closer to me than the other.
Is that being judgmental? sure, but so are you.  I bet you put your mothers, wife's, friends needs before strangers don't you?  Are they both not human? Yes, i think they are.

We need help from the media industries (very influential).  More people are realising that putting animals under any kind of stress, releases toxins in the adrenalin.  They adhere to the inner lining of the nerve and muscle fibres (the main areas which are consumed).  It has been recently scientifically proven, that this leads to impotency and cancerous illnesses.  For years it was thought that such "meat" contributed to virility and sexual potency, but it actually has the exact opposite effect.  If this was publicised via the media industries, I believe it would have a significant effect.

I agre with you Craig. Whatever I can do to help please let me know

Good for you!
