Hello everyone, as a vegetarian I was wondering why vegan people do not consume farm eggs. I totally understand about eggs from hens raised in cages and I no longer eat them, but does it ethically correct to consume farm eggs? Does it harm anyone? Sorry if I sound ignorant but I am willing to learn
That's bad, I didn't know about that. I will turn vegan soon anyway. I don't want to keep participating in animal killing just for money. Thank you for your answer
I am still concerned about my children not eating eggs in future. If it is mostly about ethical concern I am not sure whether I will be so strong if it will be no longer only about myself. What do you think?
Why are you concerned about it? Eggs are chicken ovulation, just because they contain protein doesn't mean it's suppose to end up in our stomachs. You can get way more protein from other plants.
In the U.S., over 200 million baby male chicks are killed annually, usually by being thrown alive into a giant grinder, being gassed to death, or else by being suffocated in large plastic bags. In the EU, this number is 300 million. The reason for this is that the males of egg-laying breeds, which are not bred to produce muscle mass quickly enough, cost more to raise than they can be sold for profitably. Almost all chickens are also partially de-beaked with a hot blade without anesthetic, and since the beak does have pain receptors, it is almost certain that they feel this.
If I raised my own chickens, letting any males that hatched live out their lives on the farm where they would not mate with the hens, then I suppose I would not have a problem eating the resultant unfertilized eggs. But that would be an exceedingly rare scenario.
Yes I've heard about debeaking but I naively thought it was only for chicks raised in cages. Although they are not actually raised but stored in torture boxes. I am kinda surprised and shocked that we've been decepted so long. It is difficult to quit dairy products and eggs in society, but after almost a year as vegetarian, I can say I am now vegan at home. Now I always check the ingredients listed and recently found out they often add milk or lactose in crisps, as if it was necessary. Thank you all for your answers
I watched a video on YouTube recently about the Turlock Rescue (4,500 battery hens saved). The story in itself is amazing, but the part of the video that really turned my stomach was right at the end. The revelations contained there about the egg industry and farming practices just tore out my heart.
I keep about twenty hens on my five acres - each hen has a life certificate. Roosters we dispatch when they become "hen peckers". One or two roosters is the limit, depending on their personalities. I couldn't understand why we lost some many hens after about three years, yet the roosters seem to have double or triple that life span. The answers are contained in this documentary.. I was physically sick after watching it.
Having watched and listened, I will no longer purchase ANY commercial eggs (free range/organic/otherwise). I'm so incredibly appalled in our collective lack of humanity... Purchasing any commercial chicken product will just add to the demand. I will no longer eat any chicken/poultry produce unless my girls originate it...

Now I have to face another issue. Yeopen day I met my aunt and she gave me some eggs, so I checked the box and it was clearly written it came from chicken bred in cages. So I politely told her I felt very uncomfortable with it and I would not eat them. She replied that it was just a used box but she naught the eggs to a local farmer she knows And assured me they were raised in open air, so she still gave me the eggs and I didn't know how to refuse anyway. I know there is a code with numbers usually, but not on those. Maybe it's a good sign but I just want to choose what I eat. I want to turn vegan, at least when I'm home as I cook for myself. By the way I'm not sure eggs are so healthy wherever they come from. What do you think?
