How do vegans/vegetarians feel about sharing a grill with a meat eater?

Hey guys!

Where I'm from, summer is just around the corner (hopefully!), and I'm currently living with two of my best friends, both of whom are meat eaters. One of my favorite things about the summer is the cookouts and being able to cook on the grill. Grilled veggies are so delicious! Being a new vegan, I'm just not sure how to go about grilling my veggies if my friends use the only grill we have to cook meat. Has anyone else run into this issue? I'm contemplating buying myself a cheap charcoal grill to use for myself, but is that going too far? What do you guys think?

get a cheap grill! They are your best friends, they will understand.

your grilled veggies are definitely going to have the taste of meat if you grill them on the same grill unless you clean the grill before cooking.  I mean you could also just have your own metal grates and change them after your friends have cooked, so then you don't need a whole grill set up.  the charcoal itself will hardly contaminate your veggies if the fat is all burned away.

Separate metal grates is an awesome idea! I never thought of that, thank you! :)

Grilled veggies certainly are delicious :) Ugh, I'm part of the Honor's society and they're grilling tomorrow and I'm just not going. I can no longer stomach the smell of meat, at least not for very long. Makes me pukey. I haven't personally run into the issue of having to share a grill with someone. Of course, if a vegan eats out anywhere that isn't purely vegan, there's a chance of cross contamination. I guarantee lazy cooks cross utensils all the time. Maybe you could take a practical approach and have your veggies grilled first or off on a side burner? It depends on the grill. You can have veggies grilling on a different level (above the meat so juices don't drip down) and do it that way :) If you really loving grilling I'm with Navjot, get a cheap grill for yourself! A good investment.

I've been noticing lately that the longer I go being veg, the less I can stand to be around meat. At first it didn't bother me so much, but now I cringe every time I open the fridge/freezer and see meat near some of my veggie food.. especially raw meat. Or whenever one of my roommates is preparing raw meat around me I literally have to just walk away..

I may go the route of just buying myself a cheap grill for the simple reason that I have a feeling it'll end up being too much of a hassle worrying about whether or not my veggies will get contaminated haha

It definitely grows on you, the distaste for being around anything meat :/!! I know how you feel about the fridge and the meat situation Grosses me out completely. I wish you luck on the grill, I am thinking of investing in one myself :) Just a good thing to have for BBQ'ing veg*ns like us haha xo

Completely agree with you!

I go to the beach everyday and close my nose when someone starts barbecuing.

Blugh, know how that feels. Today at school all around campus there was the stink of BBQ'd meat :/ Makes it hard for veg*ns to enjoy public places sometimes -,-!!

LOL that you are :) <3 <3 <3

Yuck! Agreed.. Buy yourself a cheap grill!

just grill ur veggies in tin foil

I would suggest buying yourself a cheap grill. That's what I do when I'm in my hometown but when I travel to relatives houses, they tend to clean theirs and then make my tofu and veggies first.
