That's a really good question...i bet every vegetarian has come across this question at some point...my friend used to ask me this question all the time and i think we won't know until we're actually in the situation. At this point, I don't think I'd eat under any circumstances but survival instincts make humans do anything...but again, I think if someone does eat some meat for their survival, it's justified...Even animals eat off each other for their survival!! But what we're doing (killing animals for the sheer pleasure of eating meat) is not justified at all!
I've never seen the movie! I wanted to try and read the book first. If you've read the book though and you find the movie holds water, I'll just go watch the flick then :)! Looks really good. Can't wait to give my input afterward.
I personally didn't like the film, but yes, I would eat meat in a situation like this.
Humans are in a unique situation here on Earth. The reason we have the luxury of vegetarianism is because we are smarter, and because we can afford to. If I was on a boat in the middle of the ocean, I would most definitely attempt to catch and eat fish. Natural selection, us eating animals and getting ahead is what got us where we are, and our compassion after the fact let us start our work to save the animals that suffer unduly. As soon as I was back to health, I would be vegan again, but if I were to die, if you were to die from refusing to take a life, the world would lose a compassionate person. You have to love yourself above all other creatures, because if you don't love yourself, you cannot truly love anything else.
