Okay, you are vegetarian, or vegan, but why on earth would you need to eat mock meat and cheese (tofu, seitan, tempeh, yuba, etc.)? Are you so nostalgic of the marvelous taste and feel of meat? Can't you really do without it? And why--I am addressing vegans in particular--can't you do without those horrible spices that make you smell so unpleasantly? No one forbids you from eating seitan, tofu or whatever else you like--if you are crazy about it--but being vegetarian (or vegan) merely means avoiding meat (or meat and any food of animal origin); it doesn't mean to be tofuvorous or seitanvorous. There are plenty of non-animal-foods you can choose from without deceiving yourself with mock meats, and without asphyxiating your neighbors with the smell of spices. Do you hate plainly cooked vegetables so much? Don't you realize that your eating mock meats makes you even stranger, and less convincing, to carnivores? As I said, do eat seitan, tofu, and the rest, if you find it irresistible gourmets' food, but please stop trying to give your teeth the old feeling of chewing meat. Stop eating meat with your mouth and with your mind.

Dead animal flesh tastes good because it's a learned taste.  I smoked for only 5 years, and quite over 30 years ago.  But, I still remember it tasting good.  The first cigarette?  No.  It tasted awful.  But, that last one was great.  How many coffee drinkers loved that very first cup?  No one!  It's an acquired taste.  When our babies are a few months to a year old, we start giving them pureed dead animal flesh.  They hate it.  They spit it out.  They regurgitate it.  But, we keep forcing it down their throats and finally their body starts to tolerate it, and ultimately to like it.  Unfortunately, that never goes away.  I've been veg for 8 years, and still love the smell of a roast chicken.  Last year, I accidentally ingested some kind of dead fish flesh that was on a pizza.  When I got sick later, I investigated, and learned what I had done.  So, my body has lost its tolerance, but, the memory of the taste is still there.  We are biologically vegetarians.  Our bodies not only don't need meat, but resist it.  Asians have eaten tofu for centuries.  It's not dead animal flesh, nor is it imitation dead animal flesh.  I'll occasionally eat a veggie burger, because it tastes good.  So what.  Get off your high horse.

I see where you're coming from. Back when I was eating meat, I didn't like anything mimicking meat, I either wanted meat or vegetables, but not vegetables looking like and trying (failing) to taste like meat. Now I STILL don't like these things, mostly because they resemble meat too much, giving a feeling somewhat close to eating meat.

But I don't agree with your conclusions, because taste is a very personal thing. I DO want a lot of variation in my food -- all the time just cooked vegetables wouldn't be an option. I do not expect anyone to hate what you consider "fake meat", just because they dislike meat.

On a personal basis, I do not care at all what another person eats, it's THEIR decision. Trying to interfere with peoples decisions is a sure social fail. On a more global scale, I'm quite happy with people eating "fake meat"; after all they don't eat meat, thus helping to reduce animal suffering, food shortages and environmental damage.

That all said, I think tofu isn't just fake meat. There's quite a lot of different products and some are really tasty, don't remind me of meat at all and are just a great addition to e.g. chinese vegetable dishes :)

i agree with you. I posted something similar recently and didn't know such a post already existed. I hate fake meat and would never want to have something which would be a replacement of meat.

But then again, this could be because of where I come from- India. In India, there are just two things: vegetarian (no meat/fake meat) and non-vegetarian (meat). And these are usually divided based on communities. If I'm born into a certain community, I would be vegetarian. So having never tasted meat, I feel I don't want to have something which may look/taste like meat.
