What do you say to people when your out at dinner and they ask why you don't eat meat or dairy and you know they are not going to understand and you want to save yourself from having a fight about it. I say to them for health reasons but I need something to say that's simple and that's to the point and then the convo will be done. I do like to have talks with people about it but sometimes I just know there's no point and want to stop the conversation

Permalink Reply by Jessica Gordon on February 8, 2012 at 7:59am I try not to offend them or get too graphic, but my reasoning is moral: I cannot stand the way your hamburger got on your plate. So I'm honest and tell them exactly that, but with minimal detail. If they want me to go more into it I'll gladly shed light on the horrible business of slaughterhouses, and then I may wind up on the subject of other animal issues (ie. puppy mills, animal testing, etc). If they get upset or in my face about it, it's their fault, not mine: they asked me and I answered.
Sometimes I get heck for it though. Like once I was at the doctor's for a check-up and (after somehow getting onto the subject of vegetarians) some old man told me that I was going to die because I didn't eat meat and that it was stupid not to because they're 'just animals; it doesn't mean a thing'. Oh, I got so upset, but my mom was there and cooled things down. I gave the man a cold look before leaving the room.
I love talking about it with people who have open minds and won't shoot me down after a few minutes. If they're mature and can hold a conversation (including their own input), then it's awesome. Luckily I have a friend who's not vegetarian but supports me and will talk about it without calling me out. It's awesome.
Permalink Reply by Dinesh Ganesan on February 8, 2012 at 4:28pm You can say, "It keeps me healthy and I am happy being a vegetarian". I hope they would stop it right there. :)

Permalink Reply by Dinesh Ganesan on February 8, 2012 at 6:39pm Doctors asking that question is the strangest thing. I believe they are the ones that should know the most about it. In India there are so many vegetarians but the doctors dont say anything about it. You should just let them know that it keeps you happy and healthy.
I ask them back... reverse-psychology. :) It's the simplest I can think of.

Permalink Reply by Winz on March 26, 2012 at 6:03am I keep it simple.
All energy comes from the sun and therefore vegetarianism is the most efficient diet. Also, karma is a bitch.

Permalink Reply by Tricia Poots on March 26, 2012 at 6:34pm I do a couple of things depending on the person and how I'm feeling.
1. Because I have heaps of food allergies.
2. Have high cholesterol.
3. Trying to lose weight.
Doctors seem to be the worst offenders in fighting with me over my choice. No idea why.
