Fish Feel Supporters' Group

Fish Feel was formed to promote an issue which largely is heavily under-regarded, even amongst the AR and veg*n movements, considering the immense scale of the problem worldwide.

Extract from their website:

Fish Feel is the sole organization devoted exclusively to promoting the recognition of fish as sentient beings deserving of respect and protection.

Despite fish constituting the largest category of animals used for food (including as farmed animal feed), and despite huge numbers of fish harmed for research, "sport", and aquaria, their well-being receives very little attention, including by the animal protection community.

Fish Feel primarily serves to help educate the public as to why these animals are deserving of our appreciation, the immense problems caused by their exploitation, and how we can help them.

Some further information on why fish should receive more of our concern and why FIsh Feel was formed is now available on;

(by Mary Finelli);

With all of the problems in the world, why have I founded Fish Feel, the sole organization exclusively advocating on behalf of fish as sentient beings?

Also consider Animal Aid's comments about their and Viva!'s 'Day of Action for Fish' –.

Scientists agree that fish – as well as crustaceans like crab, shrimp and lobsters, and cephalopods, such as octopus and squid – experience pain and suffering in much the same way as land animals, yet there are hardly any laws protecting them from harm. Both wild-caught and farmed fish suffer greatly at the hands of people and, unlike most other animals killed for food, are often slaughtered without pre-stunning and may take a long time to die.

So many fish are killed that their numbers are not counted, only their weight in tonnes.

My buttons are pushed the minute people start calling themselves vegetarian even when they're still consuming fish.

Mine, too, Noy, and sadly it is so common. Plainly they don't know what "vegetarian" means. We need to make a point of explaining it to them, and why they should care about fish. There are so many reasons!

Like much veggie literature, it talks about the number of animals "saved" by becoming a person becoming veggie. Of course, those animals that are deliberately bred as farm animals would not have had their lives "saved" as they would never have lived at all, but at least they would have been "saved" from a lifetime of imprisonment and in most cases torture. The figures for animals "saved" also seem to include only those animals that the non-veggie would have actually eaten himself(or herself) - the real figures are much higher firstly because many animals are also killed to be fed to the deliberately bred farm animals mentioned(1), and secondly because many wild animals are poisoned or otherwise killed to prevent them from eating crops that are being grown(2). At a lecture I once attended the number of animals that would be killed in order to supply the food of a person who chooses a typical omnivorous diet was calculated to be, over that persons lifetime, a shocking 60,000 or thereabouts.
(1) As an example, vegan GP Dr. Michael Klaper mentions in his lecture "A Diet for All Reasons" that about half of the fish caught in the USA are actually fed to farm animals rather than sold for human consumption, see; or
(2) Even a person who eats only plant food is therefore causing some animals to be prematurely killed if he/she buys commercially produced food, but at least the number of animals he/she will cause to be killed is drastically lower, not least because a vegan requires much less plant food to be grown to supply his or her diet.

Good points, Barry. There is also the matter of intention. Killing someone intentionally is recognized by law to be worse than unintentionally killing them. There is a very significant moral difference.

We're so glad you've found us, VeganCharles72. It is ironic and exasperating that so many people oppose some animal cruelty while abusing other animals. Hopefully it is a matter of ignorance, and if so we need to educate them. I hope you will follow the Fish Feel Facebook page and sign up for the newsletter.
