Welcome all! Thanks for joining. United We Stand :)
One of my intentions here is to pool our resources and support each other, so I encourage anyone and everyone to ask any veg*n lifestyle questions they might have. I personally have loads of information I'll be sharing. I've already sent this link to some of you, but here it is again: www.freefromharm.org is one of my top reference sites from an ethical and moral point of view, though it has many great articles that focus on all aspects of plant-based lifestyles. It's American, but I'll be sharing links to great local sites I like as well.
After having gone through the mental journey from unconscious flesh-eater to vegetarian and then vegan (and realising that it turns into a spiritual evolution as well), I realised some time back that, if ethics and morality are part of one's reasons for making the change, this really is an ultimate expression of love. Expanding one's love and compassion to all living things.I try to tell curious people that although learning the horrifying truth about the lives our habits affect and making the connection is extremely saddening, uncomfortable and painful, they should really try to look at it as an opportunity to make an incredibly positive change in their lives. As most of us know, facing the truth means taking responsibility for our actions, and being more conscious of the atrocities we humans commit all the time does invite a lot of pain but also the potential for a lot of joy. It's a GOOD thing and I feel it's important that this message be expressed to people that are on the edge of waking up. I usually recommend they watch www.earthlings.com and I know that there will likely be tears involved and that they might want to turn away and shut it out, so I try to reinforce the positive aspect in the hope that they will see the entire documentary through. Once that happens, there's usually no turning back and they start that special, absolutely essential journey for themselves and then spread this to others around them.
This attitude is part of my choice for the group profile pic :) cos that's really what it's all about...
the consumption going on in society is overflowing...and it is not right now about the gorging on material as it is with the gorging and over consumption of meat and alcohol. When bird flu was announced and mad cows disease and all the others that have not made news headlines...that was already a sign to stop consuming meat. I dont eat meat because of so many reasons and just one of them...because I don't consume the flesh of another being. I am not a carnivore.
I have stopped contributing to the death and slaughter of sentient beings...now the challenges i may be faced with in life is because i have to fix the path i am on and not because of the karma attached to the lives lost so that I can fufill my taste buds for a few minutes...
I hope people, individuals can awaken by themselves and be inspired to be vegans, vegetarians. you cannot force it on anyone nor make them feel bad about it because they will just resist the idea...after all...you dont know, what you dont know. hope we can inspire them to want to stop eating meat!
More people are awakening at an increasing speed :) This makes me very happy and hopeful.
Thanks for linking up South Africans, I think a lot of us feel very isolated. I've been vegetarian for 17 years and for a long time battled with well-meaning family and friends who thought I was jeopardising my health and particularly my son's health by not eating meat! Now I find it much easier, but in the beginning could have done with some moral support.
I know what you mean Melinda - we're surrounded by people who love wearing their blinkers and allow themselves to be indoctrinated by all the persistent myths that exist around plant-based diets. It's ironic considering the fact that it's more healthy than consuming animal products. There are even life insurance companies that offer preferable rates to veg*ns now because of the decreased health risks :). I haven't been doing it for nearly as long as you, so I can't imagine how difficult it might have been. It really is great to look around now and see how much more popular it's becoming and how much info is easily available.
People can throw Studies and Facts at each other continuously. I always tell people to get the info from the horse's mouth - speak to those who have actually been living the lifestyle for generations, and quickly realise that all those myths are just that - myths.
