Connect with vegetarian and vegan friends from all over the world.
On Wednesday, March 13th, I attending the movie screening of the documentary called Earthlings. It was sponsored by CUNY Hunter College's PAL(Path to Animal Liberation),which is an animal rights group. It was held in Thomas Hunter Hall and started at 5:30 pm.
It was a great turnout for this event. This was my firstMeetup event and I must say that it was great. It was a great opportunity to interact with Vegetarians/Vegans and other veggie curious people. Although I did not go to the event with anyone, I had a lot of fun. I met a girl named Diana. She was really friendly. She said that she was an omnivore and that she heard about this event through a friend and she was curious and wanted to attend. Coincidently, she ended up sitting next to me to watch the movie. I was very curious about how her reaction as well as the people around me would react to the graphic scenes in this film.
Before attending this event, I heard about Earthlings and I decided to watch it. I've seen several documentaries via Netflix. Some of the films that I have seen were: Vegucated, FoodMatters, Farmageddon, Fat, Sick& Nearly Dead. I am a member of numerous Vegan groups on Facebook and heard about how graphic the scenes were and how this film had changed so many peoples' lives to become Vegan. So I had to see it! I went to www.filmforaction.org. This website has countless documentaries that people can view for free. I must say that this is a very useful tool.
I started to watch Earthlings and I wasn't prepared for what I was going to see. My heart couldn't take it any more; I had to stop the film at about seventeen minutes. I was determined to attempt to watch this film again. I saw a meetup event to a movie screening for Earthlings. At that moment, I believed that it was a sign. I RSVPed for it and then there I was. I felt more prepared and with a still heavy heart for all the abuse that animals suffer every day, I watched it from start to finish. It was narrated by actor and fellow Vegan, Joaquin Phoenix. This film focuses on the animal abuse and cruelty in its many forms: Pets, Food, Clothing, Entertainment, and Scientific Research. It was a very eye opening experience and one that I will never forget. Eventhough, I knew that I didn't know anyone in this room; I felt that I was not alone and that comfort alone helped me stay.
This event provided delicious Vegan food which included hummus (three different types like Jalapeno hummus), vegan chili, rice and beans, Daiya cheese with crackers, stir-fry, vegan lasagna, etc. There was so much food and definitely leftovers after the event. I just wanted to give a very much deserved kudos to Hunter College's PAL for hosting this event. They were warm, welcoming and organized in hosting this event. I hope to attend more events hosted by them in the future. Thank you! If you would like more information about PAL please visit: https://www.facebook.com/pages/PAL-Paths-to-Animal-Liberation/49916...
Before, I left I signed up for their email list and I hope to get updates about any upcoming events that they host. The documentary called Earthlings was so informative and eye opening that I bought a copy of it and I hope to share it with others too! It was $2, which was a great deal(especially with someone on a budget). They also offered free pamphlets about becoming Vegan, stickers and Earthlings pin buttons.
An organization called FAUN(Friends of Animals United NJ/NY) was there. They are an animal and environmental liberation activist group. They had several books for sale. They are organizing a demo/protest against Ringling Brothers & Barnum Bailey Circus at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, NY this week. Also, in attendance was Mickey Z. He is an author, blogger as well as a social justice activist and fellow Vegan. He is hosting an event in partnership with PAL, called Occupy For All Species: Social Justice in the Age of Climate Change. It will be held on Tuesday, March 19th at CUNY Hunter College's HW Lobby at 5:30pm. If you would like more information, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/408951385862842/
