As you are a moderator for the VegFriend site and I wasn't sure who else to contact I am writing to request permission to conduct non invasive netnography research on the public posts in the VegFriend online Facebook community page. The research forms part of my postgraduate studies in digital media at Deakin University, Melbourne Australia. There is no cost involved in the research, I don't represent any organisation and my views are my own.
Should you agree I am happy to provide you with a copy of my research findings in June after my research has been assessed. I have been a vegetarian for 25 years. As we know vegetarianism and veganism is on the rise globally, I think the research could add value to the vegetarian and vegan communities by capturing a small snapshot of the issues and concerns that vegetarians and vegans have related to their diets, health and well being, philosophy of vegetarianism and veganism, and impact of meat production on the environment.
In addition I anticipate the research will add value to the VF community by providing contemporary information on the online VF community using a contemporary research tool that will provide a better understanding of online users. I propose to observe and record the public posts and threads in the posts section on the VegFriend Facebook page over the period 8 March 2018 – 4 April 2018. During this time to ensure the impartiality of my research I would not post or contact VF FB members. I would like to include screenshots of the VF FB home and about pages if possible in my research proposal that must be submitted by 29 March?
The university assessment requires the application of the netnography framework to assess an online community. The assessment requires a 2,500 fieldwork research plan and a 2,500 report on findings. Netnography is an online research method adapted from ethnography, anthropology and psychology that is applied to understanding social interactions online in contemporary digital communications contexts.
The research shows that the application of this method to online observations and interactions provides a cultural reflection that yields deep human understanding.
