I Eat Steak

Happy New Year!

After being a vegetarian for almost two years, I caved into meat cravings and ate a big fat juicy steak, much to the surprise of my family...

VegFriend Comeback + Foodie!

Hey VegFriends,

So I haven't been to this site for quite a long time (around a month) due to lots of things: examinations, assignments, etc. I am on a semester break now, but I am actually typing this in the midst of my homework.

Much apologies to that.

Hmm... here are some very brief updates:

1. For some reason I find myself being in an excess of energy after being almost vegan. I'm not 100% vegan for some factors: social convenience, a family which is not…

Budget Fully-VEGETABLES lunch+Tricoloured mash

Sunday is a day to relax-well, at least to find an excuse to break from studies. With a potato left from the dinner yesterday, I bought some other veggies and made myself a 99.99% veggies lunch.

It started with these...

A combination of veggies like this usually becomes a plate of stir-fry (sans potatoes) for four, with FRIED potatoes at another…

I thought last week would be my last dorm-room cooking in 2014. No, I never thought that I would be cooking again today!

I think I was right in choosing to prepare my own dinner. The waiting time for ordered food is just the same, if not longer than preparing my own meal, not to mention it being more expensive and calls for me walking out in the rain. This meal is under MYR10.00 and is very filling. Guess what?

Stoemp (Belgian carrot-mashed potatoes), broccoli…

Almost-Vegan rant

Not a 100% vegan due to outside food...

But I am working towards it by preparing vegan meals for myself and opt for vegan options when eating out.

Since becoming vegan...

-clearer face

-more energy

-can think clearly

-can sleep well

-need less sleep. 5 or 6 hours is sufficient, when I needed at least 8 hours previously

-save money

-lost a little weight since ditching dairy altogether.

Sharing is Caring

Today is the last day of dorm-made meals for 2014. I have a major examination ahead, so this day, I must make it special:

Meals with my friends!

Veggies are good, but the sheer volume can be daunting for one ordinary folk to consume. To make matters worse, there is no fridge for leftovers in my college! What better way to have veggie meals than to share some with your friends? You can spread the love by sharing your meals with your friends, provided that they love lots…

Dorm Room Comfort Food

I miss mashed potatoes. I haven't eaten them in months. They are creamy, savoury, floury... Eating them while cuddled up in bed with a book during a rainy day is one of the simplest but best pleasures, ever, especially the one from KFC.

However, now I stayed away from KFC mashed potatoes after I found out that it used chicken stock for the gravy! Aaarrrggghhh! Where can I get my mashed potato fix now?

I was grateful when mum got me a little rice cooker. Well, it is forbidden in…

4-Salad Lunch!

Today, I have eaten 4 salads for lunch and all are quite awesome (I prepared it, of course I'll feel awesome!)

In fact, I made this to celebrate the end of assignments and a short four-day holiday. I intended to add a Western (Italian, American, whatever elements that's from the Western countries) flair to my lunch meal, but to be honest, I don't really know what type of meal my lunch is.

Probably the Italian elements are pasta and oregano, while the American element is the…

An Experiment with Apple Cider Vinegar

I got myself a bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar to drink and to make salad dressings. I heard that it can be used to wash produce too, so I gave it a try.

I used conventional apple and kiwi for this. I shook the solution and let the fruits soak in there.

This was the result after 20 minutes. At three minutes, the water turned yellowish; at 20…

"Restaurant" Dinner

Yes, today we ordered takeout-prepared by mom.

This spread looked like the dishes served at Chinese restaurants, but we knew what's in the dishes (except for the two plates on the top left because my family bought it).

Mom made ALL the vegetarian (and also vegan) dishes! Those on the top-left were satay by the way, made of duck and…

My Third Smoothie-Fruity smoothie

This is my first smoothie without greens and milk. It will be fully raw if organic ingredients are used.

2 medium-sized ripe bananas

1 apple

1 orange

handful of strawberries

a cup of water

Some ice cubes (because my fruits are not…

My Second Smoothie-Drink Dessert for Breakfast!

Sorry, because I'm bad at naming things, but here's my second smoothie:

  • Lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato

  • 1 apple
  • 1 orange
  • mulberries
  • handful of mixed berries…

My First Smoothie!

I can't be happier when frozen berries hit the stores in my hometown. They are so much cheaper than the fresh ones  (RM10/500g of frozen blueberries vs RM17/200g of fresh berries for example), not to mention with a packaging that is more eco-friendly and space saving (plastic bag vs plastic boxes; the bags can be reused).

This beckoned me to make a smoothie.

I basically just paired the berries with anything available in the fridge. In this case, I had mine made…

Weight Gain!

I stepped on the scale, again, after a month (because I did not go home for a month).

What? I was dumbstruck. I gained a whooping 10 kilograms in almost two months, ever since I hurt my left knee. I could not exercise at all for almost a month, and recently started with light exercise. I tried to control my food intake but apparently I am always hungry, especially since I went vegan recently and have lots of assignments.

I seriously don't…

At Age 20....

I cannot seem to tolerate dairy. At all. Anymore.

I had mild lactose intolerance but growing up, I could get away with eating that occasional slice of cheese and half a pint of ice cream. I could not consume an entire glass of dairy, that's all.

NOW-even that minute amount of dairy in drink premixes upsets my stomach for 5 hours straight!

This is great since I have an excuse to escape the cruel dairy food, but will this cause inconvenience to the people…

Kettle Summer Garden "Porridge"

This dish is college-friendly because it is cheap, easy and needs only "a proper" cooking utensil-electric kettle.

  • 300 gram pumpkin, diced into small cubes
  • 1/2 carrot. diced into small cubes
  • 30 gram brown rice…

Vegans are Pushy!

I got into a heated debate with my family again.

Firstly, I told my parents that I do not want to buy leather anymore. Immediately my parents blared at me: "The leather industry will go on anyway even without your support, plus, people eat meat, so there is leather for demand."

In fact, I felt horrible because I bought leather shoes a few weeks ago. I guess I'm a hypocrite? My legs hurt and the shopkeeper recommended the shoes to correct my feet. I asked her…

Got Milk? No thanks.

I recently went to a shopping mall with my parents when a salesgirl offered me a sample of nougat, which is a type of milk candy. I tasted it and found it OUTRAGEOUS. Why is that? I used to love milk a lot, despite being lactose intolerant. Now, a little bit made me feel crappy, stinky and nauseous. Vomiting was definitely not a pretty act, so I literally drowned myself with water.

For the first time in my life, I found myself screaming "NO!" to cheese. Mum offered me cheese…

Yes, vegetarians and vegans can enjoy Happy Meals too without the cruelty.

I have had mine this morning!

It was green-tea flavoured oats, topped with a banana, orange, apple and some walnuts. The portion is huge and it is rich in fiber and potassium. I can't believe that it contains iron and calcium too!

With this breakfast which is…

Violence against sentient beings

Exemplifies so-called human civilization

Greed, great lengths for personal luxury

Angst on the others’ families

Nature’s smartest beings, they are not.
