I have no idea why, but as of late I've been running into a LOT of religious nut jobs (note: not everyone who has a religion is a nut job by any means, However-these particular people are insane. Nor do you have to be religious to be pro life & vice versa) and I've been getting a ton of flack for my veganism and animal rights campaigning.
The most recent thing to send me over the edge was a comment made by someone (lets call her Nutty Woman) about abortion. Nutty woman informed me that animals do not matter because there are thousands babies being killed because of abortions and until people start caring about the babies animals are not important. Our conversation got pretty heated and we did a lot of back and forth like this:
"They stick a sharp utensil in the baby's brain and scramble it- its murder!"
"They hold a bolt gun to the cows head and shoot it dead, and if that doesn't work they hang it by its feet and slit it's throat- That's murder"
"The baby never even has a chance at life"
"Neither do veal calves, male chicks or newborn pigs in the meat industries"
"They need me to be their voice"
"The animals need me to be their voice too- can't you see how similar this is?"
Now the thing Nutty woman doesn't understand is Pro life activists and Animal rights activist are really quite similar.
Both fight for those who cannot speak, and fight for their right to live. Both victims are innocent and unable to help themselves. Just because one baby has four feet instead of two does NOT mean that it's not worth just as much.
In my opinion, if you're going to preach about being pro life- you should be pro life for ALL. It's majorly hypocritical to me that someone can act like their a godsend because they fight for unborn babies rights, while eating some chicken wings.
I look at children and animals in the same light- they need people to care for them, look out for them and make sure no harm comes to them. They don't have a voice of their own, and need people to speak for them. The similarities of these two movements are amazing, and I wish more people who think like Nutty Woman could understand that.
Another thing Nutty woman needs to realize is that disrespect of life is disrespect of life- it's not limited to any one species- Just because one baby has hooves instead of feet does not give any reason or validity for it's death.
It's rather obnoxious to say because it's a human, it's more important- we are no better than animals, and we are no more important. Alas though, I realize not everyone thinks that way.
I'm certainly not saying that the Pro life movement is not important- but people need to understand that animal rights encompass human rights- they are much of the same and they do not mean any less. If we can murder animals by the masses for our own selfish reasons- it's no wonder people disregard human life as well. ALL life is precious and all life should be respected. I don't know why, but this woman really rubbed me the wrong way. Just because she saw no worth in my cause she dismissed it entirely, without even putting two and two together and seeing how similar our passions really are.
In the end- I strongly believe that Pro Life, should mean Pro Life for ALL. No divisions or selective compassion.
(Side Note) I have a lot of people ask me about the Pro Life/Pro Choice debate and where I stand. Many people assume that I would be pro life because of my vegan lifestyle, and I very much am- but I also understand that there are certain situations where women deserve to have a right to make a choice. In cases of Rape or Incest- I think it's wrong to say 100% without a doubt that a woman should have to have her rapists baby. It's really touchy, and hard to be completely one sided. There are so many factors and situations that are a part of this debate-For me it's impossible to pick one side. You have to be open-minded and understanding about it- that's how I see it.
-Just had to get all that out there!
Thanks for the read :)
Comment by Lauren Woods on January 23, 2013 at 3:53am It's perhaps the most unChristian thing in the WORLD to say that one life matters over another. I'm not sure if she's Christian, but that comes from personal experience. I somehow can't ever imagining Jesus for example saying, "Don't care about this group, let's focus on this group." How arrogant.. so the lives YOU care for come first? All life is sacred, one does not take precedent over the other. One tragedy does not become less tragic compared to another. It would be just as easy for someone to say, "Well millions of animals are dying annually, way more than aborted children- and the meat industry causes starvation of actual born children, so this takes DOUBLE PRECEDENT."
Comment by Ciarra Dawn on January 23, 2013 at 3:58am That is sooo true! Nutty Woman is a self proclaimed Christian which makes her words and actions all the more disturbing. I'm not religious myself but I cannot fathom how someone can use religion to justify their arrogant choice to ignore the suffering of some while preaching against the suffering of others.
Is pain not pain? death not death? I don't get people.
Loved what you said here:"Well millions of animals are dying annually, way more than aborted children- and the meat industry causes starvation of actual born children, so this takes DOUBLE PRECEDENT." Excellent and very valid point!
I like how you argued your point, good job.

Comment by Lauren Woods on January 25, 2013 at 3:59am So much agreed. Sadly religion is often used as a shield for cowards to hide behind. "It's not me being a selfish a hole, this is what God wants." Um no, this is what YOU want, this is YOU distorting a faith to get what you want. Wolves in sheep's clothing, those were the people Jesus hated the most. "Is pain not pain"- so true. God gave these beings the ability to feel pain just as we do, to love just as we do- to feel fear, and hope, and sadness; we are supposed to have "dominion" over them, like a parents have dominion over their children (Someone said this on the forums here, and I had to steal it lol).
